Rainbow Slum

Located in the outskirts of Malang, East Java is probably one of the most colourful villages in the world! A few years ago an entire slum area known as Jodipan was ready to be demolished (mainly due to dreadful living conditions) and all of its residents relocated. However, a group of students from the local university came up with the idea to give the slum a colourful makeover in the hope of attracting tourists. The project has been considered a success and although living conditions are still poor, the area has been rejuvenated and many residents now have small businesses and earn a living through tourism.
